Best Roller and Scooter Tours

You have to stand up throughout Segway tours, and continuously pedal throughout bike tours (even if you have eBikes). Roller and scooter tours solve both those problems: you can drive around Budapest seated on a motorised 2-wheel vehicle. There are many types of scooter tours you can pick out, from simple 1 hour scooter rental to guided Vespa tours with optional photo shoots.

If you want to learn more about moped, roller, scooter, and Vespa tours around Budapest, you have come to the right place. Here, you can check out all the best scooter tours, explore the routes, and shop for the best prices.

Choose Your Ride

There are two main companies that provide scooter or eRoller tours in Budapest: Luna Tours (Excelia Tours Kft) and E-Magine Rides. To make matters confusing, most of their tours rent bikes from the same office on Bécsi Street 8, and their price/routes are very similar. There are a few other companies too, to add further options like the Vespa-driven tours of Rolling Ride Experiences or Budapest Scooter Tours.

So picking your ride starts with the question: what do you want to see? Generally, you have the following routes:

Scooter tours can include these routes or mix things up, adding extensions to the Citadel, Margaret Island, or take deviated routes. If you want to do something a little different, you can explore the rental-only services at Luna Tours or pick a private tour – these give you the flexibility to discuss alternate routes or detours with your guide.

Best Budapest Scooter and Roller Tours

Each tour has its own special conditions, routes, starting times and routes. Read on to compare them in greater depth.

#1. Choice of Small-Group MonsteRoller E-Scooter Tours

E-Magine Rides offers 6 different MonsteRoller tours of Budapest, from a 1-hour photo-stop-only session to 3 hour comprehensive guided tours, and a 4-hour private tour with food tastings along the way.

It is one of the most popular roller tours for good reason. You have a plethora of options to pick from, exploring specific areas of Budapest, doing a full 3 hour loop, booking a private 4 hour tour or going for a straight 1 hour loop around downtown Pest. Here is a breakdown of the different route.

  • Happy Hour (1h): €39.90 per person. Starts at 16:00. You have to book for a minimum 2+ people. Explores riverbanks and Margaret Island without guide
  • Essence Route (1.5h): €59.90 per person. Starts at 10:00, 14:30. Explores downtown Pest
  • Citadel Route (1.5h): €59.90 per person. Starts at 15:30. You have to book for a minimum 2+ people. Explores Gellert Hill and the Citadel
  • Castle Route (2h): €69.90 per person. Starts at 12:00. Explores the Castle District
  • Comprehensive/All In Route (3h): €99.90 per person. Starts at 10:30, 14:00. Buda, Pest and Margaret Island
  • Half-Day Private Route (4h): €319 minimum per group. Starts at 19:30. Covers Buda and Pest with food tasting stops

The Happy Hour is purely designed for riding, you don’t have a guide to talk you through the sites. You just ride up and down the riverbanks on both sides and check out the inner part of Margaret Island.

With Essence, Citadel and Castle you are getting more thorough tours of those respective areas, with live guides.

Take a 3-hour Comprehensive/All In tour and you get a bit of everything (excluding the Citadel). This tour explores downtown Pest, goes up to Margaret Island, and then up the Castle District in Buda.

The Half-Day Tour with Tastings is only available as a private tour, so it is much better value if you book in groups of 2+ or 3+. This one doesn’t cover the Citadel, but it does do downtown Pest, Buda Castle, Margaret Island, as well as the Jewish District, and heads up to Heroes’ Square. It includes 5 tastings along the way, such as lángos or chimney cakes, which you will need as you clock 30+ kilometres across the city.

#2. Monster Bike Roller Guided City Tour

GetSegway has two different routes and private bookings in this package, all of which cover the Buda Castle. Travelling with up to 10 people per pod, GetSegway’s Castle District roller tours offer great value for money.

There are two open group routes, a 1.5 hour Castle District only tour and an extended 2.5 hour route that also covers Pest.

  • Castle (1.5h): €45 per person. Starts at 10:30, 14:00, 17:30. Only explores the Castle
  • Castle and Pest Grand Tour (2.5h): €59.00 per person. Starts at 10:30, 14:00, 17:30. Explores Buda Castle and downtown Pest
  • Private Tour (2.5h): €160 pp for 1, lower price per head for bigger groups. Starts at 10:00, 14:00, 17:30. Tailor-made route

The standard 1.5 hour loop only focuses on the Castle District, with dedicated stops at the Elisabeth Bridge, Buda Castle, Fisherman’s Bastion and the Chain Bridge. It is compact but covers all the main areas. If you opt for the 2.5 hour tour, you cover those areas but also do a loop around downtown Pest. You get more stops at St. Stephen’s Basilica, Liberty Square, the Parliament and the Shoes on the Danube.

With a private tour, you can tweak the full route with your guide. They can give you recommendations and plan detours or even reroute the entire trip for you, targeting the areas that you want to check off your list. Private tours are only really worth the money if you book in groups of 2, 3 or more people.

#3. Guided City Sights Tour by E-Scooter

This grand 3 hour tour covers downtown Pest, the riverbanks on both sides, Margaret Island and the Buda Castle, checking off multiple major sights in one large circuit.

The premium Grand City Tour (3h) covers a lot of ground across Buda and Pest, with strategically designed stops to break up the extensive riding. It covers downtown Pest, making stops at St. Stephen’s Basilica and the Parliament, where you can learn more about the sights from your live guide. On the Buda side, you will ride up the Castle District to Matthias Church and, time permitting, make a stop at the Fisherman’s Bastion. The tour also takes you along the riverbanks on Buda and Pest, with a loop up in Margaret Island.

#4. Budapest: Wide-Wheel E-Scooter Rental

If you are confident behind a roller and would rather go at your own pace, do your own route, then why not a rental? Luna Tours offers 1-, 2- and 3- hour scooter rentals, where you make your own plan.

There is a practice session to help you get familiarised with the scooter and you get briefed about the traffic in Budapest. Otherwise, this is pretty much a DIY tour where you can explore the areas for yourself. You can stop at any sight you fancy, park your scooter and stroll around on foot, return to your scooter and then head on to do some exploration. Just be sure to arrive back at the office before your time slot is up.

#5. MonsteRoller e-Scooter Night Tour to Castle Hill

The night tour of the Castle District begins at sunset, so you will catch the last golden rays of sunlight on Budapest and reach the key lookout points in the Castle District by the time night has settled, and the city is illuminated.

E-Magine Rides adjusts the starting time of this tour to sunset, so it varies each month. The tour takes you along the Danube Riverbank on the Buda side, past the Castle Gardens, and then up to the Buda Castle itself. There, you ride through the Castle streets while the sunlight fades away, and key monuments like the Matthias Church light up. There are photostops to catch epic nighttime photos, and a guide to talk about the history of the Castle District. This tour can only be booked in groups of 2+ people.

#6. Buda Castle E-Scooter Evening Tour

The nighttime Buda Castle tour by Luna Tours explores the area directly below the Castle District, from the Funicular to the Castle Garden Bazaar, before heading up to the Castle District after the sun has set and when the buildings are fully illuminated.

This 1.5 hour tour doubles as a sunset and evening ride. Luna Tours adjusts the start time to coincide with sunset, so you start while the light begins to fade. During that time, you ride past the Funicular at Clark Adam Square and the Castle Garden Bazaar, caching views of the Danube River just as the darkness begins to set. Then, you head up to the Castle District to check out Matthias Church and the Fisherman’s Bastion fully lit up. With photostops and a guide to fill you in on the stories of the area, this is a laid back tour that catches the Buda Castle at its finest.

#7. E-Scooter Top Sights Tour with Fisherman’s Bastion

The Buda Castle route with Fisherman’s Bastion starts off at midday and takes you on an extended discovery tour of the key areas of the area. With a live guide and plenty of stops, it is an easy-going tour perfect for beginners.

Usually, the Castle District-only tours run about 1.5 hours. The extra half hour you get here gives more time to really soak up the atmosphere at landmarks like Matthias Church, the Fisherman’s Bastion, and down below, the Castle Gardens. You get a more rounded guide of the area, looping down past the Castle Gardens as well as the key sights up in the Castle, and your guide has more time to answer questions and unwrap the history of the area in greater depth.

#8. Budapest Sightseeing Tour: Explore the City on a Scooter

Don’t be fooled by the name – this is not a scooter tour on an eScooter – it is on a vintage Vespa-style moped, taking you round Budapest in 2 hours with an optional photoshoot upgrade.

You get the retro bikes, the helmets, and a quick orientation to start. Then, the guide takes off and leads you through downtown Pest, where you stop at St. Stephen’s Basilica and the Parliament. The other leg of the tour is in the Buda Castle, where you ride up to the Fisherman’s Bastion and Matthias Church, with photo stops and a guide who will talk you through all the local history.

As you are riding a vespa, you must have a drivers’ licence, a car B licence or moped AM licence will do. Also, there is a photoshoot upgrade, where you can get epic snaps riding your vespa in the heart of the city by a professional.

#9. Top sights of Pest City Centre Incl. Parliament

An ambitious route that packs a downtown Pest tour with Margaret Island and the Pest riverbank, Luna Tours gives you sped-up scooter tour of Pest. The addition of Margaret Island turns this into more than just a standard Pest scooter tour.

Most downtown Pest tours take up around 1.5 hours, with the only exception being the E-Magine Happy Hour tour (but this doesn’t have any guide stops). So for Luna Tours to extend that loop with a stop at Margaret Island, this tour becomes faster and cuts some of the time you get with your guide at each dedicated stop. The downtown Pest leg heads to St. Stephen’s Basilica, Liberty Square and the Parliament. You then head up the Buda riverbank to Margaret Island for a quick stop, before heading back down the riverbank and back to the start.

#10. Grand Vespa Tour of Buda & Pest

Travelling through Budapest on a Vespa, this is one of the hottest motorbike tours in the city, but it is also very rare to find available. The grand tour takes you on an extended 4 hour Vespa drive throughout the city, it is really one of a kind.

The main problem with this tour is the availability, it is very difficult to book. Even in peak season there may only be a few weekly slots. If you can book it, then you are looking at a 4 hour extended tour of Budapest. It does what a lot of other tours don’t, going up to Heroes’ Square and the City Park. Then, you do a deep dive into downtown Pest and onto the Buda Castle and Citadel. The only area missing is Margaret Island.

You can pick between the 5cc and 125cc mopeds, but just know that you must have a drivers’ licence for these. The 5cc scooter requires a car (B licence) or a moped (AM licence). The 125cc scooter requires a motorcycle licence (EU: A, A1, or A2 licences or the equivalent).
