Best Etyek and Suburban Wine Tastings

Budapest is the commercial capital for wines, it is the hub where you can sample wines from all over the country. But if you are rooting for something more local, such as wines from traditional family-run businesses, innovative new blends or niche bottles that you won’t find at the major Budapest wineries, then you have alternatives.

In fact, there are wine regions that are barely 30 minutes by car from Budapest, the most famous of which is Etyek. Instead of looking for the truly local bottles in Budapest, you can build a programme around visiting the towns outside Budapest that are famous for their vineyards. We are calling them Suburban Wine Regions here because they are a stone’s throw from Budapest, and you don’t need to go out as far as the historic wine regions like Eger or Tokaj.

Intro to the Suburban Wine Towns

You will most likely read about Etyek wines when looking for a good out-of-Budapest wine town to visit, but it is not the only one. You also have Páty, a town that is famous for its cellar-houses that look like Hobbit houses from The Lord of the Rings. Or, Monor, the “town of 1,000 wine cellars” that hosts local tastings regularly.

Getting to these places can be a bit tricky if you don’t have a Budapest Public Transport pass, and even then you would either need a Pest County Pass (not for Etyek) or special tickets that go to these destinations. The experiences below factor in transport, so you don’t need to do any guesswork or stress over which bus or train to catch back to Budapest.

Best 4 Etyek and Suburban Wine Tastings

These experiences are mostly aimed at groups, not all accept solo travellers or they may charge you a premium to do it alone. Onto the wine tasting, not all include the price of the wine tasting in the ticket, but you can arrange to have your own wine tastings while you are in the town, with the help of your guide or driver (if you need a translator or a local to make recommendations).

#1. Countryside Wine Tour With Meal and Transfer Etyek

There are two versions of this Etyek trip from City & Wine Ltds. The lunch tour starts at 10:00, and the dinner tour starts at 15:00. Both include a meal, wine sampling, and visits to family-run wineries in Etyek.

This tour is well-priced and is basically an all-inclusive that has the wines, the guide and the meal to make for a perfect day programme. With the lunch start, you are going to visit 2 wineries, taste 8 glasses of wine and then finish off with lunch. The dinner programme is 5 hours long, and features 3 wineries and 12 glasses of wine.

During wine samplings, you will have snacks to complement the wines, and you will drink 4 wines at each of the wineries. This is an open group tour, so it is subject to availability and can get sold out. On the other hand, if no one has bought tickets on a specific day, they may only allow bookings for groups of 2+.

#2. Páty Wine Village Tour with Tastings

A tour that takes you through Páty with a local guide, this is a unique experience where you get to go inside old cellars and taste rare organic wines.

A fantastic alternative to the well-known Etyek, this tour to Páty has that authentic local touch, as you head in and out of cellars and sample at least 4 wines. You should bring cash if you want to buy any bottles, this is an old-fashioned place and way off the beaten track for most tourists. You also get snacks with the wine samples to soak up the drink.

This is an open group tour, the hosts limit the group size to 8, and you can only book in groups of 2+. A lot of people who have taken this tour have praised the personable hosts and the level of detail they go into describing the wines and history. Also, you get to go inside the cellars, which is charming, but you may have to bring a jumper or extra clothes because it can get cold.

#3. Etyek Village Private 4-Hour Wine Tour

Cityrama’s Etyek Tour takes you into the heart of this charming village, with a professional guide who can walk you through the main sights and teach you about the local production methods.

This is a private tour so you aren’t travelling with open groups or on public transport. You get an air-conditioned van with a guide who will talk about the history of the village and the wines you are going to explore. Wine sampling and entrance fees to any events or private cellars is not included. But your guide can help you find your way in Etyek and assist if you need help buying tickets or bottles.

4 hours is enough to explore the village, sample plenty of wines and even comfortably have dinner or a late lunch in Etyek. As this is a private tour, you have to note that while you can go solo, you will be paying the same price as if you booked 2 tickets. So it is much better value if you are going in groups of 2 or more.

#4. Monor Half Day Wine Tour

In half a day, you can walk through the famous “village of a thousand cellars”, and then head to the host’s winery, Fecske Pince, where you get a tour of a 150-year-old cellar, sample wines and then finish with a traditional meal.

This tour is designed for groups of 4 or more, so you can’t book solo or in groups of 2 or 3. Unlike most village wine sampling tours, this one is actually hosted by a winemaker from Monor, so you get to see the village and then head into the winemaker’s cellar and get to sample 6 of their wines.

You get a local guide to walk you through the village, and this tour is designed specifically for smaller groups. If you are after a truly authentic local experience and a glimpse into the village winemaker lifestyle, there is no better tour.
